A Message From Myrna

Greetings All,

As Dawn moves through this next phase of her journey, I know that many of you may be wanting to reach out, and may feel disconnected if you can't visit or call. I want to encourage each of you to use the blog to start sharing stories and thoughts about Dawn and what she means to you. This will be a gift in two ways. First, Dawn and her family can visit there and read about how much love is out there for Dawn. Secondly, it will help all of us to feel connected to each other. The people that love Dawn and are loved by Dawn come from a lot of different places in her life. It is nice to have a place where all of us can come together in celebration of Dawn.

Now, I know that many of us have never used and blog and it, frankly, is outside of our comfort zone. So, have courage, it is not hard. At the bottom of this posting is a small word - "comments." You drag your cursor onto that word and click on it. It will take you to another page where you can read what comments are there. If you want to leave a story or comment yourself, you will see a box in which to type it. Underneath the comment box are three buttons. Click the button marked "other." Enter your name beneath that. That is it. When you are satisfied with your comment, just hit the "publish" button and it will be added to the other comments. If you are getting this, I know that you "do" email, which means you can blog! Isn't that exciting!

So I invite each of you to use it to connect with Dawn and each other.

Keep up the prayers and the loving thoughts. If you want to join in the prayer circle, we will be meeting this coming Saturday, August 25, 10 -11 a.m., at my office, 2225 N.E. Alberta St. Suite C, Portland, OR 97211. If you have questions, please feel free to call me, 503-281-6015.

Love,
Myrna Yoder

Dawn - I only recently heard of your illness from our mutual friend, Emily. I want to share with you and your family how much respect I have had for you over the years. I first met you, Dawn, when you were my daughter Catie's 2nd grade teacher and I was your parent helper. I remember always having a lot of laughs with you and admired your natural and loving way with your students. Catie adored you. When asked about teachers she has had over the years at NM, (Catie is a junior in HS this year), she ALWAYS says that Miss McConnell was the best 2nd grade teacher ever. She also says you were the best art teacher ever. Clearly, you have had a lasting, and positive, impact as her teacher. Thank you. When you left teaching to pursue your dream, I was so happy for you. I missed you - but was thrilled for you. Following your heart boldly down a new path takes courage - and you certainly have that. Please know that I am thinking positive and loving thoughts for you and your family. With love, Maureen Feldman

Miss McConnell,
I remember in elementary school being so excited to have you as my second grade teacher. You were always the teacher everybody wanted to have, partly because of the fun projects, but mostly because of your amazing personality. When I look back on elementary school, the memories from your class are among the most vivid. I hope you know how much of an impact you have had on me. Love always, Catie Feldman

It is great to hear about Dawn from the other end of her teaching...as Dawn's friend I always heard the heart warming and hysterical stories about kids.
I always knew she was a WONDERFUL teacher from the respectful and enthusiastic way she described her classes.
Dawn and I are running, walking and hiking buddies. She is having a very hard hike now...but travelling along with the same resolve and courage and yes, sense of humor she always shows.
Love to Dawn every step of her way.
Jenny

Hi Dawn,

It's good to hear about your teaching years. I almost forgot you as a elementary school teacher! I just remember the artist. What a great teacher you must of been, I'm sure you left a very big impression on those kids. I know they loved you, as we all do. Love you dear friend. Sandy.

Hi Dawn~
Most of us know your talent as an artist and as a teacher but one of your best features is your talent as a storyteller. I loved listening to all your stories during the "40-minute duty free" lunchtime we shared at North Marion Elementary. You remember so many details, exactly what a kid said, exactly the expression they gave you, your memory for humor is extraordinary. My favorite story, the one I remember most vividly, is the one about a younger you owning a sewing business. The business was located in a building that was shared with some other type of business-- I can't recall now the business-- but the employees were mostly, if not all, men. The story that I remember is of you biting 2 halves of a button, snap, grommet, something... to get it to fit together. Well, in the process of biting it you clamped the end of your tongue between the 2 pieces. There it was pinched on the end of your tongue and you too embarrassed to go out and ask the men for help did what any good seamstress would do... you took your exacto knife and carefully sliced off the end of your tongue, hacking away ever so gently until the button, snap, whatever it was... was cut loose from you. Oh the horror the first time I heard that story and yes, the awe. You are courageous. You are amazing. Your threads have woven into the fabric that is me and for that I am a willingly changed person! You have given me so many riches I can never repay... from views on politics, religion, art, literature, cuisine, teaching, you are a mentor and I love you dearly!
Always thinking of you! Emily

Hey Dawn...remembering when we were workin' together on the sidewalk outside of Ringlers Pub on Burnside. Remember the homeless young man with the guitar? He serenaded us with the prettiest song. I think that was also the day you brought the huge bag of M&M's to share as a celebration of reaching your goal weight loss with Weight Watchers. What an irony, eh?
Love you,
Olivia
